When and How to plant Honeyberry-Haskaps

When and How to Plant Honeyberry-Haskap Plants:

The simple answer for the average home gardener is:

Honeyberry-Haskaps should be planted in the fall, just as they are headed into dormancy.

Honeyberry-Haskaps are very cold hardy and have a rapid growth cycle which is important to understand when planting.  Spring plantings can send the plant into shock and disrupt this intense growth cycle resulting in delayed blooms/flowering and subsequent setting of fruit as well as next years new growth.

Deeper understanding of the rapid growth cycle of the Honeyberry-Haskap:

Due to the Honeyberry’s northern origins, they are adapted for rapid spring growth of their flowers, followed by fruiting, followed by the growth of the next years berry stems.  If planted during these intense growth spurts, disruption of the cycle will likely effect the current years harvest.

Once they’ve grown their new stems, they begin going into dormancy for the winter. This is the proper time for planting as the intense growing season is over.

Haskaps are tolerant of soils varying from

It is assumed that most things want planted in spring but that isn’t true for Haskaps, and many other species in fact.  In general, most annuals are grown from seed in late winter/early spring and do need planted at various times in spring, depending on species and hardiness.  Perennials and shrubs have a much different growth cycle and a large portion of them prefer a fall planting as well.

We recommend for new or small Honeyberry growers to pot the 2.5-inch plugs in the Spring into 1 to 3-gallon pots, growing on over the Summer season and planting out in the orchard in the Fall.
